Sha'ir al-Islam (The Poet of Islam), Martyr of Mu'tah • رضي الله عنه
One of the twelve Naqibs at Aqabah, veteran of Badr and Uhud, and one of the three primary poets who defended the message of Islam with eloquence. Appointed by the Prophet ﷺ as third commander at the Battle of Mu'tah, where he took up the banner after the martyrdom of Zayd and Ja'far and charged heroically into the Roman ranks.
“The Prophet ﷺ announced to the people with tears in his eyes: 'Zayd took the banner and was martyred, then Ja'far took it and was martyred, then Ibn Rawahah took it and was martyred... until one of Allah's swords (Khalid) took the banner.'”
