The Sincere Penitent of the Pillar of Abu Lubabah (Ustawanah at-Tawbah) • رضي الله عنه
One of the 12 Naqibs at Aqabah appointed deputy governor over Madinah during the Badr and Qaynuqa expeditions. When he unintentionally gestured across his neck to the besieged Banu Qurayzah, he felt such instantaneous contrition that he tied himself to a wooden pillar in the Prophet's Mosque, vowing not to be freed until Allah revealed his pardon.
وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ
“And [there are] others who have acknowledged their sins. They had mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil. Perhaps Allah will turn to them in forgiveness...”
