Mother of the Believers, Custodian of the Mushaf of Abu Bakr • رضي الله عنها
Daughter of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab and Mother of the Believers. Wed to the Prophet ﷺ in 3 AH following the martyrdom of her husband Khunays at Badr. Described by Jibril (AS) as 'one who fasts much, prays much at night, and is your wife in Paradise.' Entrusted with the sacred primary manuscript of the Holy Qur'an compiled under Abu Bakr, from which Uthman produced the standardized imperial codices.
“Uthman sent word to Hafsah saying: 'Send us the manuscripts (suhuf) so that we may transcribe them into the codices (masahif), and then we will return them to you.' So Hafsah sent them to Uthman.”
