Accepted Islam in the year of Khaybar along with Abu Hurayrah. Known for intense piety, patient endurance of thirty years of chronic illness, and extraordinary spiritual rank such that the angels greeted him with salam until he had himself cauterized. Appointed chief Qadi and teacher in Basra by Umar.
