The Sincere Penitent Whose Repentance Was Revealed in Surah At-Tawbah • رضي الله عنه
A warrior poet who sustained seventeen wounds at Uhud defending the Prophet ﷺ. When he lingered and missed the expedition to Tabuk, he chose absolute honesty over excuses before the Prophet ﷺ. Endured fifty agonizing days of social boycott until Allah revealed his divine forgiveness in Surah At-Tawbah (9:118).
وَعَلَى الثَّلَاثَةِ الَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ... ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ
“And [He also forgave] the three who were left behind [and regretted their error] to the point that the earth closed in on them despite its vastness... then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.”
