The Prophet ﷺ declared him the most knowledgeable of the Ummah in matters of lawful and prohibited rulings, and dispatched him as judge and teacher to Yemen. Established foundational methodology for judicial reasoning (Ijtihad).
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Mu'adh to Yemen, he asked: 'How will you judge?' Mu'adh replied: 'By the Book of Allah.' The Prophet asked: 'And if you do not find it?' He replied: 'By the Sunnah of His Messenger.' The Prophet asked: 'And if you do not find it?' He said: 'I will exercise my reason (Ijtihad).' The Prophet patted his chest and praised Allah.”
