Al-Sabiqun al-Awwalun, Surrendered His Wealth to Emigrate • رضي الله عنه
An Arab captured as a child and raised in Byzantine Roman lands who later escaped to Makkah and became a master merchant. When intercepted during the Hijrah, he handed over his entire life savings to Quraysh in exchange for his freedom to join the Prophet ﷺ. Upon his arrival in Quba, the Prophet ﷺ rejoiced: 'The transaction has prospered, O Abu Yahya!' Appointed by Umar to lead the Muslims in prayer during the Shura deliberations.
وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ رَءُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ
“And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking the approval of Allah. And Allah is kind to [His] servants.”
