Islamic History Explorer represents historical dates, geography, and biographical details strictly according to authentic evidence. Dates marked as APPROXIMATE or UNKNOWN are left unforced to prevent artificial certainty.
“Later Nabataean civilizational occupations of the Al-Hijr site exist alongside the earlier Thamudic inhabitation referenced in scripture.”
Prophet Salih ﷺ was sent to the people of Thamud, successors to 'Ad who carved magnificent dwelling-places into rocky cliffs in northern Arabia (Al-Hijr). Demanding a sign, they asked for a miraculous she-camel to emerge from a rock. Allah granted the camel with specific rights of drinking on designated days. In open defiance, the wickedest among them hamstrung the camel. Salih warned them that divine punishment would arrive in three days. A piercing blast (as-sayhah) destroyed the insolent while Salih and the faithful were saved.
« كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا »
