Prophet Shu'ayb ﷺ was an Arab prophet known for his persuasive and eloquent speech. He was commissioned to the people of Madyan, an active trading community that practiced polytheism and defrauded people in trade by shortchanging scales and highway extortion. Shu'ayb preached both theological monotheism and economic ethics: 'Give full measure and weight with justice.' When the arrogant elders threatened him with exile, divine judgment struck them through an earthquake and an overshadowing cloud of fire (Adhab Yawm az-Zullah).
« قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّي وَرَزَقَنِي مِنْهُ رِزْقًا حَسَنًا ۚ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُخَالِفَكُمْ إِلَىٰ مَا أَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ ۚ إِنْ أُرِيدُ إِلَّا الْإِصْلَاحَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ »
