Hawazin archers ambushed the vanguard in the narrow defiles of Hunayn at dawn, causing the forward columns to scatter. لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ ۙ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ۙ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْئًا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ
“Allah has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Hunayn, when your great numbers pleased you, but they did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you in spite of its vastness; then you turned back, fleeing.”
Narrated Al-Bara: A man asked him: 'Did you flee from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Hunayn?' He replied: 'Yes, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not flee... I saw him on his white mule, declaring: I am the Prophet, no lie! I am the son of Abdul Muttalib!'
